Cuban drummer and composer Dafnis Prieto has been named one of 22 MacArthur Fellows for 2011 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Often unofficially named the “genius grant,” the $500,000 award will be distributed quarterly over the next five years. The 37-year-old Prieto emigrated to America in 1999, and quickly gained recognition for his creative musicianship and impressive drumming skills. He joins such former award recipients as Jason Moran, Regina Carter, John Zorn, George E. Lewis, Ken Vandermark, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, George Russell, Ran Blake, and Max Roach.
