On Monday, January 23 at 7:30 P.M., the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood, Calif., will host the 16-piece Buddy Rich Big Band in celebration of Rich’s 100th birthday. The band features Emmy Award–winning drummer Gregg Potter, special guest Kenny Aronoff, and Rich’s daughter Cathy on vocals. This special evening will kick off a year of tributes and celebrations of Rich’s life.
Aronoff appeared with the Buddy Rich Big Band on its 1994 release Burning for Buddy, Volume 1, alongside fellow drummers Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Matt Sorum, Steve Smith, Neil Peart, Manu Katche, Mino Cinelu, Billy Cobham, Max Roach, Rod Morgenstein, Omar Hakim, Ed Shaughnessy, Joe Morello, Bill Bruford, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, and Steve Ferrone. Aronoff called this project “the greatest and most intimidating recording session of my entire life.”
