BY GARRETT GOODWIN

So far we’ve worked primarily with our hands to master the stickings needed to begin leading with our weak hand. Now we’re going to play two different types of grooves that will expose any weakness in our weak hand that we’ll continue to work out over the next few days. These are grooves that I use live and in the studio all the time. If my left hand can’t keep up and support the groove, I’d find myself in a tough spot! Treat these grooves as ways to monitor the progress of your left hand. It’s all about practical application today!

  • Practice slowly, with precision
  • Pay attention to the dynamic levels among your ghost notes, ghosted thirty-second notes, and accents
  • Try to make each pattern groove, don’t simply play each line. Make it feel good!
