On this day in 1988, Ilan Rubin, drummer of Lostprophets and Nine Inch Nails for their final tour (and again in 2013 for Hesitation Marks), was born. He’s also played with Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and his own project, The New Regime.
Rubin started drumming at age eight, and by 11, he was playing Warped Tour and Woodstock in his brother’s band F.o.N, which earned him the title of youngest musician to ever play a Woodstock stage. In addition to drums and percussion, the multi-instrumentalist plays piano, synthesizer, cello, ukulele, guitar, bass, and he sings. For NIN, Rubin increasingly plays acoustic and electric kits—at the same time. (He once made a video showing how he does the latter.)
Watch the hard-hitting groove master reconcile industrial-rock technicality with nuanced force in the following songs, including “Survivalism” above, live in Atlanta, in 2009.
Nine Inch Nails “Copy Of A”
Paramore “Brick By Boring Brick”
The New Regime “Exhibit B”
The New Regime “We Rise, We Fall”
