In fact, Motley had two drummers next to Tommy. Randy Castilo and Samantha Mahoney.
Randy Castilo
Randy Castilo is a former member of Ozzy Osbourne’s band. He played in Motley Crue for several years, from 1999 until 2002 when Samantha took over but more about her later.
He had various connections and ties with Motley over the years. It was Tommy Lee who suggested Randy for an audition with Ozzy Osbourne.
Tommy was at the party with Ozzy, and when he heard Ozzy was looking for a drummer, he called Randy and hooked him up with Ozzy right away.
Later, when Tommy left Motley Crue, Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife, suggested Randy to replace Tommy.
Randy played on Ozzy’s legendary albums like “No more tears”, “The ultimate sin”, “Just say Ozzy,” and two more.
Randy also played on a tribute album with Ronnie James Dio and performed in a Vince Neil band.
He died from squamous cell carcinoma, a common cancer type that can usually be cured if it’s discovered early.
He had to leave Motley just before the “New Tattoo” tour to recover. He was able to heal at first, but after some time, the cancer was back, and this time, Randy could not get out of it alive.
He died on March 26, 2002; he was 51.
Why did Motley Crue have a girl drummer?
Samantha Mahoney had to jump in and replace Randy, diagnosed with cancer. Her bend Hole went on hiatus at that exact moment, so she was free.
Randy’s last album with Motley was “New Tattoo,” also Sam’s first album. She played on the live version.
After two years of touring, Tommy returned, and Sam had to back off.
Sam is a hard workering drummer who discovered drumming at the age of five and the age of fourteen, she was accepted in Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York.

He played with Motley from 1981 until 1999 when he quit the band to pursue his solo career. Ha had bad relations with Vince Neil, and he felt it was time for a change. He sent a letter through his lawyer stating that he wasn’t returning.
Five years later, after he didn’t succeed with his solo career, he was back with Motley.
After many efforts put in by their management, Crue was back together in 2004. Managers knew fans wanted to hear Motley and they could still earn substantial money as a company.
