Doc Sweeney brought some tasty steam-bent kits to the 2018 Hollywood Drum Show as seen in this video. For starters, there was the a small-sized, deep red “Volcano” kit, a tiger ash set with natural ash hoops on the bass drum.
Next up, builder Steve Stecher describes the “Copper Ridge” kit made of curly maple, rubbed with a dark stain for a deep brown color, with contrasting natural curly maple hoops on the bass drum. It’s a beefy sounding kit.
Finally, Stecher describes one of four elm kits he recently finished, this one with a blue stain and contrasting natural wood hoops on the bass drum. Elm is similar to mahogany, but it’s not commonly used in drum building. This kit sounds rich and full with a 22” x 12” bass drum.
