BY GIL SHARONE | FROM THE SUMMER 2018 ISSUE OF DRUM!
Here’s a simple verse pattern for the reggae classic by Junior Murvin called “Police And Thieves.” What makes it challenging is getting the feel right — especially at 64 bpm. It’s pretty much a 1 drop that sits between a straight and swung feel. It should feel hypnotic and groovy. There’s also a double snare hit at the end of each bar, which adds a nice flavor. When you play the snare drum hits make sure not to disturb the flow of the pattern.
Gil Sharone is the current drummer for Marilyn Manson and Stolen Babies, and the former drummer of Dillinger Escape Plan and Pucifer. He has had a lifelong love of Jamaican styles and has played with Fishbone, Dave Wakeling, and reggae Grammy winners Morgan Heritage and Slightly Stoopid. His DVD/book Wicked Beats covers Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae drumming.
