Vic Firth Co. in Norwell, Mass., a leading manufacturer of drumsticks and mallets, announces two new products for the cajon. With its roots in Afro-Peruvian tradition, the centuries-old portable and versatile cajon has seen a major resurgence in the contemporary music scene.
Vic Firth states that it designed its new cajon products with functionality and musicality as the top priorities.
The Cajon Bru-llet ($54.95 MSRP), measuring 13.5″ x .65″ x 3.25″ (L/D/spread), marries elements of a brush and a mallet to translate both slap and bass tones to the cajon. It has a hickory shaft with medium-stiff plastic bristles and a 1.5″ mallet head made from XLPE foam.
On the VKB4 Cajon ($28.25 MSRP; just under 8″ long, with a head size of 1.5″), a spherical foam rubber head produces a warm, full bass tone on Cajon with just the right amount of attack. Drummers can also try it out on a bass drum.
