You might think you’re in the holiday spirit because you’re wearing red and green. But The Flaming Lips are really feeling it this year in the new video for their Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy mashup—they’re wearing red and are painted green. Happy Christmas, everyone!
Drummer Steven Drozd, percussionist Nicholas Ley, and Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Derek Brown, Jake Ingalls, and Matt Kirksy deftly handle the snare drum and other instruments on the Lips-ified David Bowie/Bing Crosby version from 1977 (watch it below). Let us know which version you prefer in the comments below!
Fun fact: “Little Drummer Boy” was originally titled “The Carol Of The Drum” when written in 1941 by American composer and teacher Katherine Kennicott Davis. It was popularized in a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale.
The Flaming Lips also announced this week they’re getting their tuxes pressed for a performance of their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin in its entirety with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, taking place at Denver’s Boettcher Concert Hall Friday, February 22, 2019. Tickets are on sale now at coloradosymphony.org/Tickets.
LIPS fans might also be interested to know that Drozd has created a podcast covering the band’s 35 year recorded career called Sorcerer’s Orphan. The multi-part series illustrates the band’s creative process covering, and is available on your favorite podcasting network.
