Zecqureia (a.k.a. Zee) Johnson is an extraordinarily talented drummer and musician, but it’s clear that her penchant for practice, hard work, and social awareness is what sets her apart. After Sheila E.’s performance on Purple Rain inspired a then two-year-old Johnson to hop on the throne at her local church, it wasn’t long before the Houston based phenom took over the drum chair full time. After years of waking up at 4:00 A.M. to practice, she began sharing clips of her playing on Instagram. Her dazzling pocket and crisp chops attracted a lot of attention (ours included), which helped her discover how few female drummers had a significant presence online. Soon after, she shifted her focus from purely playing to educating and inspiring as many drummers as possible. Johnson is currently teaching locally in Houston, directing a pair of local bands, and working on new music projects that have her exploring orchestral percussion along with string and horn arrangements.
