The 13th annual La Rioja Drum Festival, directed by Alberto Cuevas, took place on September 29 and 30, 2017 in La Rioja, Spain, hosted by Universidad de La Rioja. This event featured Dom Famularo, Glen Sobel, Gene Hoglan, and Josh Dion alongside Spanish drum artists Szilard Banai, Matt de Vallejo, Jose Carlos Losada, and the Paco Casas Band. On September 29, Famularo and Manolo Cascales presented a masterclass entitled “Rediscovering John Bonham.”
Sobel, who has been on tour this year with Alice Cooper and is a longtime Practice Pad Lesson columnist for Drum Magazine, graciously agreed to document his experiences and performances at La Rioja in the form of this 11-minute video blog, exclusively for Drum Magazine. He shot, edited, and captioned this video entirely on an iPhone.
Sobel’s video blog is presented chronologically, covering the festival’s two days with appearances by Famularo, Hoglan, Dion, Losada, Cascales, De Vallejo, and Cuevas, including behind-the-scenes access as well as clips of masterclasses and concert performances by these drum artists.
