You can get a lot of mileage out of the six-note linear pattern in Ex. 1. It’s great for fills and beats and fast and slow tempos. Be sure to play all accents with the right hand, or go ice them on toms or another sound source, like you see in Ex. 2.
Now try inserting left-hand accents between the two right-hand accents (Ex. 3). Adding a “pa-diddle” (RLL) to the mix spices it up even more (Exs. 4—5). Produce a tasty groove by placing the right hand on the bell of the ride and snare and the left hand on the hi-hat (Ex. 6).
The pattern can be played as sixteenth-notes as well to create a polyrhythmic feel. The following examples are one- and two-bar phrases based on this idea. (Exs. 7—8).
