BY AJ DONAHUE | FROM THE FALL 2018 ISSUE OF DRUM!

As a drummer, good hardware makes everything you do easier. Everything. It can improve load-ins, setups, first dates, tear-downs — you name it — all while providing a little extra peace of mind during performances. It’s the foundation of your entire drum set, and it deserves your attention.

Thankfully, there’s no shortage of reliable and well designed drum hardware available today. We rounded up specs and details on new stands, mounts, pedals, and a few accessories that hit the shelves in 2018 to make sure you know exactly what’s out there. There’s a lot to see here, so we should get to it.

Unless otherwise indicated, all prices are MSRP. That means you’ll likely find these products on shelves for a lower cost than what’s printed here.

JEFF HAMILTON SIGNATURE CYMBAL STAND

Jeff Hamilton with his signature Canopus cymbal stand

CANOPUS

A key part of Canopus’ new product development strategy comes from studying some of the most beloved vintage drums from around the world, then updating them with modern appointments and the company’s impeccable craftsmanship. After the successful launch of last year’s lightweight Hybrid hardware, Canopus is finding a common ground between those two concepts with the release of the Jeff Hamilton Signature Stand. Based on design input from the man himself, the flat-base unit features a gearless tilter, a plastic tilter sleeve, and pipe caps to prevent rattle. As another nod to the swinging star’s influence, the tilter shaft comes in at just 6mm to better accommodate vintage cymbals.

• Pipe caps
• 23.5″ stored length
• 26.37″–55.11″ height range

ludwig Drums 2018 Hardware

Lugwig Evolution hardware pack and P88AC throw-off

LUDWIG
Ludwig’s P8X snare throw-offs are some of the most recognizable in history, and they’re still in use on many of the company’s drums today. For 2018, Ludwig welcomes a new addition to the family with the P88AC throw-off and butt plate pack as an upgrade or aftermarket replacement for all P83, P85, and P86 units. Wave-Lock technology in the tension knob prevents slippage, while the combo’s low mass build minimizes shell contact to prevent resonance dampening. Additional holes and screws make the duo easy to install on most Ludwig drums.

If you’re looking for something a little more standard (bam!), Ludwig’s also rolling out a new Evolution hardware pack which includes two convertible boom cymbal stands, a swiveling three-leg hi-hat stand, snare stand, and single chain bass drum pedal. Double braced bases all around add durability and security to this budget-friendly set.

pearl Drums 2018 Hardware

Pearl P530 single pedal (left) and P922 Powershifter double pedal

PEARL

Pearl came kicking into 2018 with the release of two high-powered,
budget-conscious bass drum pedals. The Powershifter P920 (single) and P922 (double) pedals draw on many of the same concepts found on Pearl’s top-flight models, but utilize streamlined designs to save a little scratch. An ultra-smooth single chain drive makes for speedy action underfoot, while switchable Perfect Circle and Eccentric cams allow you to customize feel. The pedal’s namesake Powershifter function lets you dial in footboard position by choosing from one of two pre-set options, and Pearl’s double-sided DuoBeater with Control Core has an adjustable face to ensure that every stroke hits flush. FrictionLess spring rollers deliver a silky response.

For players in search of something a little more right-out-of-the-box-ready, Pearl’s new P530 standard pedal finds a happy balance between simplicity and strength. The double chain unit comes equipped with a DuoBeater, a Linear Action Cam for smooth strokes, Uni-Lock Beater Angle Cam for even beater impact, and an Eliminator-style footboard.

rogers pedal Drums 2018 Hardware

ROGERS
It’s been a while, but we finally have a new bass drum pedal bearing the Rogers name. The new Dyno-Matic pedal serves as a modern reinvention of the classic Swiv-O-Matic model; they’ve even streamlined the hyphen-to-O ratio. The updates really bring it into the 21st century. This is a real T-800 vs. T-1000 Terminator situation.

Much like it’s ancest-or-matic, the Dyno sports the same skyward-facing spring housing arm for the rocker cam. It looks rad, and it leaves room for an easily accessible tension adjustment knob on the top side. And also like it’s Swiv-O sibling, the new Rogers pedal has a height-adaptable axle assembly and housing to offer even more feel and positioning customization. Independently adjustable beater hubs, axle releases, and toe-stops give plenty of room for customization. And the lever action quick-release hoop clamp eliminates the need to reach down under your own foot and twist a wing nut 40 times in the dark [Hallelujah tambourine shake]. Of course, because it is the 21st century, there’s a double-sided beater with felt and hard plastic.

DYNO-MATIC BASS DRUM PEDAL
• Top-mounted tension toggle on elevated rocker cam housing
• Independent axle release
• Independently adjustable beater hub
• Adjustable toe-stop
• Quick Flip dual-surface felt and hard plastic beater
• Lever action quick-release hoop clamp
• Attack Adjust footboard angle adjustment in heel plate
PRICE: $315

Sonor 4000 Series double bass drum pedal and 2000 HHLT hi-hat pedal

SONOR
German giant Sonor Drums added 4000 and 2000 series hardware to its catalog several years back, but spent some additional R&D time working on the bass drum and hi-hat pedals for each line. New double chain 4000 series bass drum pedals are built with independent beater and rocker cam adjustment, independent pillar construction, ball bearings in the heel plate hinge, and two-sided felt and hard plastic beaters. Updated hi-hat stands include the same re-designed footboards found on the bass drum pedals; 3-leg, double-braced, swiveling bases, double-chain drive; hex rods to prevent clutch slippage; and 7-stop bottom cymbal cup tilters for precision angle adjustment.

Players interested in lighter, slimmer pedals and hi-hat stands should look no further than the new 2000 series pieces featuring the same footboards found in the 4000 line. Tama Drums 2018 Hardware

Two years ago, Peter Erskine helped Tama design the Classic Stand, an extremely lightweight, flat-base, throwback-style cymbal stand that weighed in at a whopping 3.2 lbs. Yamaha Drums 2018 Hardware

Yamaha Crosstown lightweight hardware

YAMAHA
Lightweight hardware is on everyone’s must-have list right now, and while most manufacturers are focused on slim-cut, single-braced units, Yamaha is taking a different approach. The durable tubing is cut to standard sizes suitable for matching with any other Yamaha hardware, but saves considerable weight with the use of aluminum instead of steel. Gearless tilters provide positioning flexibility, while steel tubes add rigidity and strength.

Currently, the line consists of straight cymbal stands, snare stands, and hi-hat stands.
